Behind the Lens: Phelia Barouh

8 February 2018 text Natalia Ivanova
She says that the lens is a helmet, and the camera is a protection, but the distance is invisible in her portraits, which closely observe the face in front of her. We see them in the Black Box project since 2016, but the work of Phelia is not staying just between these five walls. After returning to Bulgaria from Madrid, she is a photographer of One Dance and One Design Week, and the founder of the photo festival FotoFabrika (inspired by the Spanish PHotoEspaña) and the eye behind the camera of important projects such as The Strange Other, where together with Boryana Telbis and Kiril Zlatkov tells a few stories from the refugee camps in Bulgaria. We meet her shortly before setting her focus on couples in Lovers' Box (Sabai Gallery on 9 and 10 February), but our conversation goes out of the box and runs in other directions - from the first love in Mexico to the newest one with four paws.
