The Story of Things: Martin Penev

9 August 2018 text and photos Sevda Semer
We meet in an apartment with a strange flower lamp that grows from the ceiling in the middle of a piece of artificial grass, with a friendly robot dog in the corridor and an old clock on the shelf, lined with furry textiles. They all come with history, but today we are listening about bears, a tiger, a deer, a magic wand and some other important subjects around Martin Penev. He is the winner of the BAZA this year, the award for contemporary young artists which will take him to a New York residence in 2019. He has studied theology separately, then goes through digital arts and shows before he realizes that he has accumulated unnecessary luggage that he don't really need to do his job. Since then, his ideas have been growing into installations. In Sofia City Art Gallery we can still see his Gentle Compression by the circumstances - soft plush figures, crushed by sharp stones or painfully caught between dry rods and ropes. What is happening next for now is unclear because Martin is in a moment of pause and rethink. And what bothers an artist in vacation? Many things that we understand from a person who pulls out of his sleeve stories with a few layers of meaning.
