Rachel McAdams is Christine, a cruelly efficient advertising imagemaker whose Germany-based firm creates lush marketing campaigns. Her assistant Isabelle (Noomi Rapace) is a loyal acolyte, tending to Christine’s whims and backing up her boss whenever it’s needed. Their bond is mildly sexual, though the kinky Christine is too busy with Dirk (Paul Anderson), or whomever else she rings up to lean in for a booty call.
Dirk, it turns out, is involved with Isabelle and seems to be playing Christine for professional advancement. Isabelle follows suit when Christine’s underhanded ways emerge. Adding to the unprofessional work environment is Dani (Karoline Herfurth), who has an unrequited crush on Isabelle — and may be her alibi when things get bloody.
    In Euro Cinema at 18:30.
  • Debate

    27 November 2013

The attitude towards madness has suffered many metamorphoses in history: from blankly contemplation, it gradually became a condemnation, segregation and medicalization of madness, but most recently it turned also to acceptance, applause and even apology of insanity: "Long live the insane!" (the prayer of Marco from “Under the Yoke” novel by Ivan Vazov). Unlike "classical" medical conditions which are measurable, the physiological conditions within the Madness are significantly blurred and allow a number of medical, social and legal interpretations. The dynamics of these limits in liberal societies can be seen in two ways. On one hand more and more until yesterday "diagnoses" in need of treatment are seen as socially tolerable (acceptable and in some cases “courted”) “quirks” that are part of the uniqueness of the individual. On the other hand there is also the opposite trend: more and more "ailments of the spirit" (mental conditions such as anxiety, anger, fear, etc., regardless of their intensity) are treated as "cases in need of a new kind of treatment" known by various names but most commonly referred to psychotherapy. With the participation of Dr. Stoyan Stavrou, Antoaneta Koleva and Marieta Dimitrova. The debate is in Bulgarian, starts at 19:00 in Red House.

  • The Waves

Arlette Ricci, a granddaughter of Nina Ricci, produced Virginia Woolf's The Waves at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre.
"From Virginia Woolf's novel, The Waves, I kept the rhythm of the sea, the time that does not pass and the people who do pass away. I have recreated the ordinary life of five of the characters whose friendship born in their early childhood has lead them to believe that they will overcome and defeat time," Arlette Ricci explained.
    The play starts at 19:00.

  • Apples To Apples

    23 November 2013

The party game Apples to Apples consists of two decks of cards: Things and Descriptions. Each round, the active player draws a Description card (which features an adjective like Hairy or Smarmy) from the deck, then the other players each secretly choose the Thing card in hand that best matches that description and plays it face-down on the table. The active player then reveals these cards and chooses the Thing card that, in his opinion, best matches the Description card, which he awards to whoever played that Thing card. This player becomes the new active player for the next round. Once a player has won a pre-determined number of Description cards, that player wins.
