Top 2019

19 December 2019
The things that made our lives better. In 2019.

THE FOOD TRUCKS
After the burgers and the brunch, another delicious wave came in 2019 - on wheels. Okay, mobile kitchens have been parked here before, but this year the choice has grown so much that we don't have enough fingers to catch everything they hand us from the windows of trucks.

BIO FOR KIDS
It's not about eco products, but it's still super healthy food - Timelines Publishing has released two gorgeous series for kids with stories of great people. Here's how the kid next to you can love real heroines like Frida or Amelia instead of some Elsa.

THE DANCE PERFORMANCES
The psychedelia Child, Kaori Ito's intimate dance with her father or Caged? Let's not choose - this year we were often in Plovdiv to watch dance theater, which makes you wonder "is it too late to start dancing?". We are ordering some Pansun Kim and One Dance Week for 2020 as well.

THE LOW PUBS
No one else used the low adjective with reverence before the people of the Low Pub made it a compliment. This year, they also showed us their list of delicious places where the interior is retro without trying, but the brandy and plates are without compromise.

THE COOPERATIVE
A bright space in Zaimov Park - once Svetlin Rusev's secret studio - began a second life as a shared office and gallery (+ shop and event space). The idea is not unheard of, but at KO-OP it's done with taste.

100 YEARS BAUHAUS
We were involved in the 100th Anniversary of the Bauhaus movement with so many conversations and events that already every other person knows what that is. We only wonder where the next thing we are going to talk about is going to be built.

THE QUIZZES
We regularly compete in bars with others who like movies, football or books like us. Why do we like it? It's great for other teams to know more than you and to learn something about your passion, but let's be honest - the thrill of the game is to win it. And get the whiskey at the end.

THE HOOD
From the new locations of Sito Studio, Artefakti and Soul Elements throughArtelie, Format and Art.E to the SeeMeOn 29 and 45 Street showrooms - new hip and art neighbors are constantly appearing in the intersections between Levski, Maria Louisa, Slivnitsa and Dondukov boulevards. It's nice to say it - the kvARTal is really happening.

ECO ECHO
It's been a while since someone rang the bell that plastic is literally flowing from our faucets, but the echo in 2019 was pretty loud here. "No, thank you, I've brought my own bag / box / cup" stopped surprising the cashier, and on sipieu.com a map of places where they even smile at it grows.

THE GALLERY
The new venue for contemporary art, Heerz Tooya, not only made its way into 2019, but did not stumble across its program all year long. We like it twice more because it is in Veliko Tarnovo - "for an exhibition" is not a bad occasion for a ticket to a city where you have been before.

THE EUROPEAN ART
This year, we have been going on big stages. Plovdiv 2019 attracted us with super exhibitions for whole Saturdays in the city, while the Venice Pavilion was drawing the world's eyes on us.

LYUBEN ZIDAROV
His name is now among the few that stood on a cover next to J. K. Rowling's.

THE NIGHT CLUB
The ground under Shipka 6 began to throb in the beats of EXE last fall, but have you heard what happens this season? The club is full every weekend with a nice audience and brave guests until the bright hours, making Sofia a warm party spot. We are a little exalted.

THE E-SCOOTERS
Remember what the soundtrack of Sofia 2019 was? That's right - the scream of the stolen scooter. Micromobility brings a bit more of a European feel to the streets, but for 2020 we also want some regulations to kill the sense of thorn from the roads.

AGA & IRINA
These films are not the first Bulgarian ones to receive festival attention and awards around the world, but "I went to see it twice" is also a valuable review given by a friend about Aga. Irina, on the other hand, made us think that we would love to watch Martina Apostolova many more times.

THE NEW MUSIC STAGES
How many square meters are Micro and Amok? Not many, but since they opened, their program has only made them feel bigger.

THE THEMED WALKS
Between buildings with important architecture or past, and in the steps of writers who searched for stories on our familiar streets and in cafes long gone - our city walks in 2019 went further than ever before with guides such as Zdravko Petrov and Read Sofia. We will read again and we will walk again.

THE GAMING
Believing the worn-out cliche that gamers don't go out of their bedrooms is your own problem with so much evidence of creativity and meaning in games: the second Sofia Game Night was even stronger, and this year ARC Academy (a talent school in the field) also opened.

30 YEARS LATER
It's been so long since November 10, 1989, and despite the level of dirt in the air, we all breathe more freely today. I you missed the socialist period here, enter the Red Flat on Tsar Assen St - it is interesting for any tourist back in time.
