Where is the art?
2020 proved to be a strange year in more than one way - both globally and locally. The protests in Bulgaria raise questions about politics, freedom, the future. But also about art. "Where does it stand today? What should be the role of artists in the political debate? ”, asks the Goethe-Institut and thus starts a poster competition Where is art?. -
An element of adventure
We don't need to spill ink to convince you of the power of a good piece jewelry - they do it on their own perfectly fine, once you see them on someone's ear or finger. A new exhibition at KO-OP brings together 7 jewelers, who are strong in their differences - that's Neva Balnikova's idea for helping us get braver in mixing and matching our pieces. -
Things we didn't know about... Martin Parr
"I am a jackdaw. I am attracted to bright colours", says the British photographer who's been obssessed with his work for over 50 years now. -
Portraits of a taboo
Talking about eating disorders may be a difficult and sad topic, but it's most scary when forbidden. Looking into it is quite important - and that's exactly what the exhibition 100 grams of tenderness invites us to do. The project is by foundation Zhivot na kilogram who for years have been talking with students about food-related problems - they contacted photographer Vera Gotseva, who's been making exhibitions on important things since her Postcards to my father series which dealt with death and grief. Now they're inviting us in the homes of 7 people - each of them with their own disorder and story. See it in Credo Bonum gallery. -
A box full of monsters
Even if your kid is not crazy about the cute kittens, bunnies and bears that have taken over the children's shelves, there is still reason to visit a bookstore before Christmas. The new publishing house, Yo-Yo Books for kids, has just gotten there with its first work for 4+-year-olds - decks 1 and 2 of the Scarily Good Monsters for coloring. -
Sofia 2050
Until November 30, under the dome of the Largo, the remnants of the past coexist with facts of the present and ideas about the future of our city, collected in Sofia Tomorrow - an exposition of infographics, sound and art installations that aims to show us where we are today and where we can be by 2050. -
Nonument
Are you curious about what it sounds like when you stand under Buzludzha's plate? If so, draw a petal on September 13th and 14th in your calendar: on Friday from 6:30 pm the history of the communist monument, which lost its symbolism, enters an exhibition at the Museum of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo, and the next day flows into our headphones like a play by the group Ligna, Stefan A. Shterev and Emilian Gatsov-Elby - from 14:00 on Buzludzha itself. For more details and options for transportation, check out the Facebook event. -
Mister Mondrian, can I borrow a vertical line?
Last year, a project between Sofia and Paris began to form a collection of our avant-garde and contemporary art for the Pompidou Center. Part of it is this lecture in which it's curator, Desislava Dimova, will look back at the local 20th century in art and its connection to what has happened west of us - on August 26 from 6:00 pm. -
Ella & Pitr
The world-famous graffiti artists Ella & Pitr change their home address with Plovdiv in the period between July 1st and 5th on the occasion of the Festival of Students Francophones Let's create together. At the invitation of the French Institute and in partnership with the Plovdiv 2019 foundation, they will create an image over an area of 5000m² together with the students, which will later be shot by a drone and shown to us all. -
What we didn't know about... Josef Koudelka
The quick facts are that he was born in Czechoslovakia in 1938 and from a young age he always liked looking at the world through a lens. Today he is one of the members of the Magnum Photos collective with his works on the border between art and photojournalism. His albums keep stories from all over the world, and he has been in Bulgaria at least three times before coming again now with his Exiles exhibition. The 75 shots in this series - a narrative about the nomad souls just like Koudelka himself - have never left the Pompidou Center in full before, and we are looking at them on the walls of the Sofia City Art Gallery in the presence of the author. -
What we didn't know about... Vivian Maier
Until 2009: nothing. Since then: she is one of the most famous street photographers of the 20th century in the United States; she was obsessed with her camera and left over 150,000 negatives; she was making money as a babysitter and she refused to show a single shot. The news today is that we will see her perfectly captured moments in Sofia as well - at the show In her own hands at the Sofia City Art Gallery on April 23rd. Right before, here we show you some of her frames and we tell the story of the opening of the archive and its past, which is strange and strong, but inside there is a ticking unresolved moral issue. -
Art For Sofia
The Plovdiv gallery Sariev Contemporary and the Markovstudio in Sofia put a plus between their names for the Sariev+Markov Sculpture Projects, which this autumn will give a brave result - a new contemporary piece of art installed somewhere in Sofia. One glance over our shoulders to the reactions around the Bronze house project last year is enough to convince us that this project is something not only meaningful but also blatantly needed. -
24 days in pictures
That's how long the Czech month of the comic book will be between Shipka 6 Gallery and 100 Rakovski St with exhibitions, events for kids and meeting with animators and painters. It starts on the 6th of March, all the events are free for entry. -
One man, 12 meters tall
The Bronze House was just deinstalled and the next project was announced after winning a contest. It's called One Man and it's by Venelin Shurelov - a painter and scenographer with rich experience who does not for the first time make a gallery out of a public square. The body of this one person is made out of screens that will show life in the city - we're now awaiting the final desicion by the Municipality to see if we'll meet the project face to face. -
The cherry on top
Artist Kalin Serapionov makes video, pierces walls to pass a neon sign in the gallery corridor, makes a self portrait in a wig and invents love stories at an exhibition. Now he enters the City gallery with a cake tray to put the icing on a video project that began 20 years ago - with two other videos around artists eating first soup, then main course. Now the time for dessert has finally come and you are also invited - the shooting of the performance The Dessert (with the Cherry On the Cake) will be on Feb 14 between 11:00 and 18:00 in the City Gallery, Sofia. -
Neue Sachlichkeit
A lecture about the Neue Sachlichkeit art trend, part of the current exhibition at the Sofia City Art Gallery - on January 31st at 18:00.
