To make a movie about racism in the US court system, you don't need to make up a dramatic story - you can just look into the recent past.

Here is the 1988 case of Walter McMillan (played by Jamie Foxx) accused of killing a girl he doesn't know in a city he has not been to. It doesn't matter how many witnesses confirm his alibi that they saw him in a restaurant - he was sentenced to death mainly because he "looks like a man capable of killing." His case is being dealt with by young lawyer Brian Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), driven by idealism in choosing to protect vulnerable people in Alabama with the help of lawyer Eva Ansley (Brie Larson). Director Destin Creton, who previously made The Glass Castle based on a true story of extreme poverty, runs the risk of nothing: tells a simple story, but manages to show that the problem is not in this single case, but in the whole system.
