• Insanity Befits Him

    9 November 2007

    text Anelia Alexandrova

With a witty DJ pseudonym like Kid Loco, you can bet it would be great to go to his party even without actually listening to the music. But his music is quite good as well. This great Frenchman has been around for some 10 years now and has served us great albums like 1997's Grand Love Story and collaborated with smashing acts like Thievery Corporation. We're warming up for his set at Yalta on November 10 and presenting you with this short intierview we did with the crazy DJ.

Sebastien Leger know perfectly well how to avoid music cliches and that is eaxctly why he has been so sought after during the last year or two. Despite being constatly on tour throughout south America and Europe, he managed to record his new album Planets and establish his Mistakes Music label. Literally hours after his set at the Canary Islands the Frenchman answered our questions about remixing Duran Duran and Justin Timberlake and what he has in store for his party at Sofia's Yalta club.
  • Lord of the Drums

    18 October 2007

    text Nikola Shahpazov

Billy Cobham is truly a drum master and during his long carreer he has played with some of the greatest jazz musicians ever and has earned himself quite a reputation. An year ago, Billy played at the Roman amphitheatre in Plovdiv, this year he'll take part at the annual Sofia Jazz Peak fest and rock Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture. We've always been quite interested in interviewing splendid musicians such as Billy, so when the chance arose, we seized the opportunity to have a little chat with him.

We hurry to meet Jivko Petrov on a splendid sunny autumn afternoon. The maestro greets us with a smile, polite and impeccably dressed. Jivko has all the reasons to be in a good mood - the live dvd Understandable of his JP3 jazz project has just been released. This gives us a good enough reason to chat with the mainman behind some of the most popular Bulgarian pop songs lately.
  • Go Ahead

Without creating too much fuzz about himself, Rushi Vidinliev continues doing his own thing. The first track off of his new album is now ready as well as a video to accompany it – it is entitled Go Ahead and does look, and sound rather new. Rushi is rather different as well, he has taken interest in all things trashy and is not afraid to start things over.
  • The Comedians

The boys and the girl, who bearly fit into this picture, are in fact musicians, very good ones. Individually they have been making music for years and some are major figures in the underground, but at present they refuse to introduce themselves in any other way but as Stand Up Comedians. After some time spent in their big company, we seem to understand why. Or almost, but we definitely laughed a lot. Enjoy their jolly tattling…

Aleksander Boiadjiev is a major figure in the Bulgarian hardcore scene. He is a vocalist with Last Hope – one of the most serious bands around, hosts the thematic show Panic Attack on Tangra Mega Rock and often gives us causes for celebrations because of the concerts organized by his agency Re-Act – bands like Agnostic Front and Hatebreed.

The leader of progressive rock giants Jethro Tull Ian anderson arrives for his second official visit to Bulgaria – this time we'll welcome him at the Roman theatre in Plovdiv. Armed only with his trusty flute and alongside the Classic FM orchestra, sir Ian would present some famous Jethro Tull tracks, rearranged with a symphonic gusto. In a short interview for Programata this Scottish music nobleman talks about Indian food, Beethoven and classical music.

Meet our future neosoul queen! And we don't exaggerate either. The girl before you is Ruth Koleva – charmfully young and talanted singer with a very unique voice. She's completely self-taught as well! we just got our hands on her new single Clean Your Heart and after learning that Ruth is back in Sofia, hurriedly arranged a meeting with her at Popa.
  • Maria's Room

    17 August 2007

    text Nikola Shahpazov

Maria Ilieva celebrated her birthday at the seaside but there was one more reason for that summer party - Maria officially launched her label Stereo Staya. She was kind to reveal the main concept and plans for the future development of the label before Programata.
  • Is There a DJ In the Plane?!

    6 July 2007

text Anelia Alexandrova, photos Virginia Records/ Magic Records

Eric Prydz is one of these heroes behind the music-stand, who run several labels at the same time, produce a lot of people and for a change every one or two years release something of their own, which occupies the charts for at least one season. What a dude! We know by hearsay that he does not like to give interviews, to be photographed and to be the center of attention, but we plucked up all our courage and called him.

we arrange the meeting with the avantgarde Bluba Lu trio in the well-cooled garden of the Boris Hristov music centre. They have just finished their rehearsal with Studio Primo orchestra merely days before the grand performance of their fourth studio project World Melancholy – a mix of their usual trip hop obscurity, Andronia Popova's rich voice and symphonic bombast. This is just the type of musicians that always have something intriguing to say.
  • Roro's Madness

text Anelia Alexandrova, photos Todor Tsvetkov for Angel Kotsev studio

  • Guru: Close and Personal

    15 June 2007

    Nikola Shahpazov

These days Guru, driving force behind the legendary Brooklyn-based hip hop act GangStarr, has concentrated solely on his own project Guru's Jazzmatazz - being a link between urban beats and rapping and skilled jazz. Days after releasing the project's fourth album - Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip?Hop Jazz Messenger: Back To The Future, Guru embarked on his first European tour ever and we managed to reach him for a quick but informative chat.
  • Lethal Weapon

    text Nikola Shahpazov

In 1992 DJ Lethal triumphed as a member of the world's greatest gang of white rappers - House of Pain. Later he made it to the top-selling nu-metallers Limp Bizkit and guaranteed himself resident position in several of Beverly Hills' finest clubs. These days he's back in the hip hop scene with his band La Coka Nostra, featuring a good number of House of Pain members. Less than a week before DJ Lethal's first ever set in Sofia, we called him in his LA house for a midnight interview.

DJ Steven (Stefan Krachanov by identity card) was one of the people, who brought the electronic revolution to Bulgaria. Today he still is a major figure in the music alignment Metropolis and is respectively directly involved in organizing the greatest dance forum on the Balkans – SEEME. His second edition began on May 17th and we managed to steal ten minutes from his preoccupied schedule for an American espresso and a few profound questions.

We met Kalin Veliov ten days after he left VIP Brother, a week before his performance at the Third Salsa Festival and just hours before the release of his new video with Nina Nikolina. As usual, the famous Bulgarian percussions player deals with (at least) five things simultaneously and has a lot of things to share. Besides, he is a very good company.

Our main topics are Erol’s solo project Guava Jelly, the gustatory qualities of Jamaican fruits and Wickeda’s European tour.

In fact we are in Ostava’s studio with Svilen alone – the other band members are not there. But we promise to gather them in the autumn, when they will issue an album. Not like now – only the best BG single for a long time, Sex in the Morning.
  • Back to the Roots

The three boys on the picture are only the core of Root Souljah, our new favourite BG gang. After their first performance ever – on December 6th last year – they managed to produce a small album with 6 tracks. If it is not obvious, they sing about love, the good and the bad, the system and about all important things in general. These true rasta people turned our hearts red-hot.
