Riot in Venice

Riot in Venice

5 February 2015
Venice is most beautiful in the spring. It's not so warm and also it's the beginning of the Biennial of contemporary art. The news of the year is that this time Bulgaria is in its program.

The Venice Biennial is not only one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art in the world. It is a painful issue for our country because of the lack of political decisions for national participation. This year, however, the curatorial project Riot on the table. Exhibition on candle light of Jana Kostova (organized by association Art today) was selected for the official program in 2015.

The exhibition is a kind of rebellion against the lack of Bulgaria's own pavilion and it's presented in a self-mocking format - it refuses itself a place in a gallery and asks why the revolutions we, Bulgarians, have, are always on the table and not on the streets. In a noisy restaurant in Venice the work of Bulgarian and foreign artists will be on napkins and table stands. If you start feeling slightly embarrassed, the purpose of the curator is achieved - yes, we're on the the Biennale, but not exactly in the way we would like. Authors can also participate with a video, which will be projected on a building opposite the restaurant.

The whole idea is to initiate a dialogue on our cultural policy, so expect more lectures, discussions and meetings.
